Difference Between the Ortlieb Quick-Lock Systems QL1, QL2, QL2.1, QL3This page is explaining the difference between the ¬†different types of mounting systems on Ortlieb bags and panniers, called the Quick-Lock System or QL system. QL1 and QL2 had been around for ever, while the QL3 came out on some Ortlieb gear in 2012, and the QL2.1 came out in 2015. Before 2015, the Ql1 system was found on the “CLASSIC” line, the QL2 on the “PLUS” line, and the QL3 system was designed for some panniers and bags usually used for commuting. Since 2015, the QL1 and QL2 system are no longer used, and all panniers “travel” use the QL2.1 system.
QL1 vs. QL2 vs. QL3 Ortlieb System.

Orltieb Quick-Lock 1 System (QL1) – DISCONTINUED

The QL1 system is found on the “CLASSIC” lines, like the Ortlieb Bike-Packer Classic, and¬†the¬†Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic¬†which are usually used as rear panniers and sometimes as front panniers on long-distance bicycle tour. QL1 is also used on the smaller¬†Ortlieb Sport-Packer Classic, and¬†the Ortlieb Front-Roller Classic¬†usually used as front pannniers or rear panniers for lightweight touring.

Automatic closing and opening of hooks by lifting the pannier handle
When the pannier is lifted by the handle, the two hooks on the reverse side are opened. Then the pannier can be hooked into the rack. Once you let go of the handle, the two hooks close around the rack tube.

All mounting components are set using allen key size 3
The hooks may be adjusted easily to the distance required and tightened in position with allen key size 3 (not included).

Continuous adjustability of the lower hook, horizontally and vertically on the elliptical rail, rotation in 45¬į steps
Fixation of the lower section of the pannier is just as important as mounting in the top section in order to prevent the pannier from sliding and pivoting. The lower fixing hook serves for this purpose; it fixes the pannier to a vertical tube of the rack and secures it in the lower pannier area. The hook can be mounted to the lower or upper part of the elliptical rail, and can be changed fast in order to adapt it to all the different rack heights.

Abrasion protection on front panniers
The two models Front-Roller Classic and Sport-Packer Classic are provided with an abrasion protection underneath the lower hook rail. It prevents damage to the pannier material caused by front quick release axles, in case the pannier is mounted to a lowrider rack on the front wheel.

Suitable for racks with a tube diameter up to 16mm
The QL1 hook system is adjustable using various inserts allowing compatible mounting on standard racks with an outside diameter of 8 -16 mm. The upper QL1 hooks can be reduced in size by inserting reduction parts into the hooks for 8mm or 11mm. The hook then closes perfectly around the rack tube and securely holds the pannier in its position.

Additional fastening straps (optional accessory) for QL1 system In particular cases it may be required to use additional straps for fastening the pannier to the rack. For this purpose we supply a flexible plastic strap which is mounted to the QL1 rail and the rack tube.

The QL2 version offers the following advantages:

  • Perfect fit to all standard racks with a diameter from 8 to 16 mm and to low rider racks¬†with welded stiffener plate
  • Automatically closing hooks
  • Extremely large adjustment range of QL2 hooks on the hook rail
  • Very large room for pedalling thanks to the pivotable rail (e.g. Office-Bag)
  • Very large adjustment range (horizontally and vertically) of the lower hook on the elliptical¬†rail which is rotatable in 45 degree steps
  • Quick adjustment of all hooks without requiring any tools
  • Quick exchange of hook inserts (8 and 11 mm) without requiring any tools
  • Effective abrasion protection by means of lower rail in the area of the front axle (quick¬†release clamp on front wheel)
  • Strong rigid upper hook rail with 3-point attachment
  • Anti-theft device for QL2 system available as accessory
  • All mounting components are easily exchangeable in case of defect

Orltieb Quick-Lock 2.1 System (QL2.1)

The new bike pannier mounting system QL2.1 introduced in 2015 is a further development of the proven QL2 system. Many important features are improved:

For higher stability, the upper hook rail is now one piece. ORTLIEB‚Äės new assembly system¬†allows the use of extremely flat nuts on the inner side; the same applies to the lower hook¬†rail.

The basic 16 mm hooks can now be reduced to 8, 10 and 12 mm; in addition, a 20 mm hook is available for larger tube diameters as now often used for E-bikes. Further modification: the hook reduction inserts are now attached from the sides and are secured by an optimized locking mechanism.

Additional improvement: the lower hook rail is now made of a two-component synthetic combination featuring softer surfaces. This reduces abrasions on the carrier. Just as in the proven QL2 system, all components are adjustable without requiring any tools, and are easily exchangeable.

An anti-theft device is available as optional accessory and can be integrated into the rail.

All bike pannier models of the Black‚Äėn White Line, the High Visibility Line and all Back-Roller Classic Design models feature the new QL2.1 mounting system for bike panniers.

¬†Orltieb Quick-Lock 3 System (QL3) –¬ DISCONTINUED

The QL3 system was designed to fit on bags mostly used for commuting in order to cut down on the amount of mounting harware on the bag itself which make the bag more attractive, less bulky and more convenient to carry around. The mounting hardware is now installed on the rack instead of on the bag. This system is now found on some bags in the “OFFICE” line, the “CITY” line, like the Ortlieb Vario QL3¬†(new for 2012).

SYSTEM QL3 ‚Äď the new generation of ORTLIEB pannier mounting systems
The ORLTIEB pannier mounting systems QL1 and QL2 which have proven their reliability for many years are now supplemented with a new, innovative variation, the QL3 system.
The secret of this new system – especially developed for office and city bags ‚Äď lies in the fact that the main mounting components stay on the rack. This results in a clear rear side that is free of protruding hooks, and significantly improves the bag‚Äôs carrying comfort when off the bike.

The QL3 system logically has all the known advantages of the previous ORTLIEB QL systems:

  • Comfortable single-handed operation
  • Automatic closing and opening of the hooks by lifting the pannier handle
  • Fixing rail can be mounted on left or right side, and optionally on horizontal or vertical bars of rack
  • Sufficient legroom due to variable height and angle
  • Lower hook rotatable in 360 degrees (24 steps each 15 degrees) for individual adjustment to various racks
  • Horizontal rack top remains free for baskets, trunkbags etc.
  • Additional mounting sets available for attaching bags to other bikes
  • Mounting rail compatible with ORTLIEB QL1 or QL2 systems

Orltieb Quick-Lock 3.1 System (QL3.1)

This system is especially developed for office and city bags, and their secret lies in the fact that the main mounting components remain on the rack. This results in a smooth rear side of the bag that is free of protruding hooks, and significantly improves the bag’s¬† carrying comfort when off the bike.
The optimized QL3.1 mounting system allows fixing of panniers to the rack in an even more simple and faster way. The bag is inserted into the lower mounting point, and by approaching the rack, the top hooks slide into the upper reception points by means of a left to right motion. Removal of the bag is just as simple and fast: simply litt the bag by its handle and move it at the same time to the left or right.

QL3.1 system has the following features:

  • Comfortable single-handed operation
  • Automatic closing and opening of the hooks by lifting the pannier handle
  • Fixing rail can be mounted on left or right side, and optionally on horizontal or vertical bars of rack (up to 10 mm)
  • Direct mounting (no mounting rail required) to rack R1 and R2 with integrated QL3/QL3.1 fixing (art. no. F78101 and F78102)
  • Sufficient legroom due to variable height and angle
  • Lower hook rotatable in 360 degrees (24 steps each 15 degrees) for individual adjustment to various racks with a tube diameter up to 14 mm
  • Horizontal rack top remains free for baskets, trunkbags etc.
  • Additional mounting sets available for attaching bags to other bikes
  • Optional set of brackets available as accessory for 11 to 14 mm tubes (art. no. E190)
  • Bags with QL1, QL2, and QL2.1 systems can also be fixed to the mounting rail
